alright, so i have a just-over 1-year-old computer which is running an AMD Sempron 3100+ processor which clocks at just over 1.8 Ghz. i was just wondering how much longer i can expect to be able to keep up with somewhat above-average multimedia computing. right now i am actually video and audio editing on it. x] i know, right? serious video and audio editing on a sempron? haha, but i'm something called a student. therefore, student=poor. (actually, the computer was a gift last christmas & i'm very greatful)

the thing is, i am going to college in a year and was planning on buying a laptop. i am wondering: 1... if the computer i have now will do me well for the next few years (in which case i won't be so picky about the laptop's power) and 2... whether or not a laptop with a less-than-2 Ghz processor would be sufficient for my needs. there is actually a used laptop for $300 with nice specs, but it is 1.4 Ghz (if i want to just buy it now, is that acceptable?)

thanks! =]

If the computer is working now for what you need, obviously it will continue to do so unless you get programs/games that need more then it can handle. A 1.4GHz (I assume intel?) would be far slower then that computer, as the 3100+ denotes something like a 3GHz Celeron cpu to match it's speed. Might want to stick to desktop as they are half the price of a notebook with the same specs (usually). It's all according to what you do.

AMD 1.8 3100+ this equals 3.1 GHz power never mind the 1.8 I would just keep what you have if your on a budget. If you really want to wake it up drop in more ram and a high end graphics card you will be impressed.

Quite possibly.

You can swap-out the processor and/or mobo & processor if you have to. Quite possibly cost less than the used laptop if you're lucky.

Please note, that some software do NOT work with laptop mobos or graphics cards. You would have to check with the software and hardware manufacturers.
