I have a 86' Jeep Cherokee with a 2.8L i am rebuilding the engine and i came across that you could put the parts from a 3.1L and increse the displacement. is this true if so what am i looking at.

Stroke was increased by 8mm to create the 3.1 from the 2.8.

The 2.8 is actually a GM LR2 engine.and was also used in the Chevy S10 Blazer. GM sells a crate 3.4 motor (92 vs 89mm bore) that is designed as a direct-fit replacement for the old TB injected 2.8 in the S10 Blazer (you can probably find it through places like Jegs.com) and this should work for your Jeep as well. I would imagine the engine and installation should be very similar between the two. It offers a substantial HP increase.

Food for thought anyway.

You cannot increase displacement by simply changing out parts. you have to have the block bored

I would say that it has to be bored out a little to make it a 3.1.
