first of all, my husband abandoned us on the street, we were homeless, i turned to foster care to put a roof over my kids head, they have been back living with me since 2001 and all of a sudden november 2006 iowa decides to charge me child support...I was taking care of my kids by giving them a roof over their heads when their father abandoned us....i prefer no more answers that make it seem i did wrong, when i did not....i asked for help and now they are charging me for that help 5 years after I got them back...isn't that rather odd.....i just wanted to know since they are already being paid, would they also take my refund even though they are being paid weekly

If you owe back support yes they can take it and they should take it. You had the children just because they dont live with you does not mean they dont need you to take care of them and the government should take the money if you owe it.

I know in some states they are able to garnish your fed/state return for any back support you may owe. If you are up to date with your support, you should be fine.

Yes if you owe back child support.

If you are current, I don't think they will.

Yes they can! As can student loans, the IRS!
I would talk to an attorney as generally all the arrearages go to the state, not your children!

I re-examine your question. in case you're contemporary in all your loan and newborn help funds, and there is no longer a judgment against you for arrears, then they gained't take your income tax examine. it relatively is provided which you're in default.
