The original meaning of GOP was "Gallant Old Party." The term GOP was first used in 1875. When automobiles were first invented, the GOP used the slogan "Get out and Push" as a reference to the oft-breaking down of the vehicles. The Party still, theoretically, stands by that slogan today, unofficially.

As time passed people replaced "Gallant" with "Grand"
