It's a reference to the Jim Jones nutcracker mass suicide. They followed their quack cult leader to Guyana in South America to establish a "utopian" society, but when it was discovered that it was a hellish oppressive cult existence, they murdered the senators and his enterage who had come to visit and then all committed mass suicide by spiking cyanide in the red kool-aid. There were so many people that stood in line for their red kool-aid that people had already died of the poisoning while they were standing in line. People were assigned to move the bodies into piles while the men, women, and children continued in line knowing what they were doing. Jim Jones died last from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

There seem to be a few decent answers:

It could mean drinking the LSD-laced Kool-Aid of the sixties and never getting right ("I've tripped, and I can't get down!"), or it could refer to the cyanide laced Kool-Aid of the Peoples' Temple, or for that matter, it could mean drinking sugar water laced with artificial colors and flavors and actually believing that it is a refreshing beneficial beverage......

You follow a party or person blindly, without thought or challenging what you hear. It refers to a cult where everyone drank tainted kool aid and died led by Jim Jones

Good question. I watch Bill O'Reilly frequently and have wondered what this meant.
