It all depends on your needs and money.

Word processing / small business - 20 - 40 GB
Word processing / large business - 30 - 60 GB
Photographer / light - 60 - 80
Music / light - 60 - 80
Gamer - 80 - 250
Movies - 120 - 500

It all depends on what you will be doing with it. For just using a word processor and browser you could get away with a hard drive of less than 10GB, though today one would be hard to find. In contrast people working with video may have a terabyte (1000+ GBs) or more of hard drive space. The nice thing about storage space is that (in a desktop) it is generally very easy to add another hard drive.

Right now for me, with a little bit of everything a 200GB hard drive would suffice, but I said the same thing a few years ago except with a 40GB hard drive - I've got 520GB of storage right now for my PC.

My first hard drive was 4 GB. At the time I thought I would never fill it up.

I currently have five hard (three of them external) drives and will likely end up getting another one soon.

iMac-160 GB
external firewire - 250 GB

Windows - 250 GB
external USB - 120 GB

external USB formatted FAT32 and readable on both OSX and Windows XP - 120 GB

Depends what they would like to do with their space! Some people keep a lot movies and such on their hard drive, so something over 300 gigs is typically necessary. I've got a laptop with a 100 gigs and it works just fine for storing all of my music and some videos.

It all depends on what you do with it. I personally have a tiny 7 gb drive from the stone age and it is more than enough for me, but I know guys that can fill up 80 gb like it's nothing.
