Gotta go with the Mazda3. I have both cars and definatly mazda wins. The jetta has nice looks but definately, i perform more maint. on it. Plus Mazda parts are going to be a little bit cheaper. I had to pay close to 400.00 dollars for just a muffler + labor on the jetta. I still love the car though. dont get me wrong.

I love my Mazda 3! It's a very nice car. But be careful if you live in a state with snow. They do not drive well on ice/snow packed roads.

Jettas tend to be hit or miss on build quality. Unless you were planning on getting the diesel engine, I would recommend the Mazda3.

depends, are you finacing, or leasing? they are both good cars, VW being a little more expensive, but for the long haul, the jetta will hold its resale value. and i always thought VW to be a well constructed, and relyable car.

Compare the two yourself! Taking strangers advice on something as major as a car purchase can be risky. Compare the two cars at sites like
www.consumerreports.com
www.kbb.com
www.caranddriver.com
www.edmunds.com
There are loads of sites that you can compare at.
