With no filter or heater it's a quite limited choice. I would suggest you go with the betta. They can take the no filteration very well as long as you keep the tank clean and just keep it from getting below about 68 or so and he'll do ok with the temperature as well.

Your options are pretty limited but this is possible if you are careful. The betta likes it around 82 degrees so without a heater, he would languish. Try a paradise fish. It is related to the betta and can take a wide range of temps from 55 - 84 degrees. It is from Korea where the temperature has big seasonal swings. Like the betta, it is an air breather (gourami family) and is actually tougher than a betta. Give him some simple low light plants like Cryptocorene wentii or Anubius Nanna and feed him sparingly as his metabolism is pretty low. Do this and give him 30% water changes every 5 days and he'll be happy. The pleco (scum sucker) gets way too big...Avoid it. get a couple small ramshorn snails instead. good luck, jason (Phoenix Phish Care)

No algae eater will live in a unfiltered 2 gallon tank. Bettas are the only option. The tank won't grow algae because you will have to change 100% of the water at least once weekly to keep toxins from building up in such a small space.

Depends somewhat on the size of the tank. If it isn't too small, a goldfish (these can grow up to 12" [fancy] or 23" [common], though). They're relatively dirty, so you'll have to clean the tank a good bit.
Paradise fish (relative of gourami) also do well at room temp and can surface-breathe like a betta. http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profiles/freshwater/anabantids/paradisefish.html
White cloud mountain minnows like it cool-cold, but like moving water. They're a small fish, so you could keep a school even in a small tank. http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profiles/freshwater/cyprinids/whitecloud.html
Guppies can also live in the tank you describe, as long as the temp doesn't get below 70. http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profiles/freshwater/livebearers/guppy.html
Danios (zebra, leopard, giant) can also live in cool water. http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profiles/freshwater/cyprinids/zebradanio.html

go with the beta - they are surface breathers and you won't have to buy an air pump- or other equipment. you can add a female or two with him. other than that you can put in about 2" of goldfish total capacity for a tank that size without extra cost. but you will have to clean it a lot more. i owned a pet shop for 10 years.

Goldfish do well in room temp water just make sure its not too warm. They do better in cooler water. Just be careful with them because they are kind of messy fish and you will have to do water changes more often. Plecos are hardy fish they eat algae and crud off the bottom of the tank. How big of a tank are we talking about anyways?
