The magnum 350 is a very good filter. Why not do a little web search and find one cheap online?

It's a good filter, but the issue with the basic canister filters are that they are great for the mechanical and chemical filtration, but their filter is way too small to do an adequate job of the bacterial filtration. For a small tank, it would be fine, but for a 55 and larger, there just isn't enough filter to do the job by itself. If you're looking to buy the cheapest canister filter, then you will have to use it in conjunction with another filter that specializes in the bacterial filtration, such as an undergravel. The undergravel is great for the bacterial filtration, but lacks in mechanical and chemical filtration. So, the combination of a basic canister and an undergravel would be a really good combination. The perfect set up in this case would be an undergravel with two output tubes on each side of the tank with two reverse flow powerheads and a basic canister filter. If you don't want to do this set-up, for large tanks, you could go with the Magnum 350 BIO-PRO System that has the bio-wheel and the wet-dry biological filter, which is not the cheapest canister. It's the top of the line canister, but is the only way you can go for larger tanks. So, either way, you need to invest in a combination of filters. Drs. Foster & Smith is having a sale right now on their Magnum 350 Bio-Pro System for only $84.69. Not a bad price. The 350, however, is only good for tanks up to 100 gallons, so you would need a larger pump for the 125 and 150 gallon tanks.

I've got a Fluval 304 for my 55 gallon tank. They are a little pricey, but I waited it out and it went on sale for $99!!! They come in bigger sizes, but I've never used the other larger models. I've had this filter for almost 5 years and it's never done me or my fish wrong. I believe they've upgraded them to '05 series, so my canister would be a 305 now. It's easy to clean and maintains things well. Good luck!!

The Penguin 350 is ok for a 55...maybe. The canisters are better. Eheim canisters are a bit more expensive, but last FOREVER. So you end up saving in the long run. jason
