Predators watch for victims who are not aware of their surroundings, so this makes sense.

This is practically a rhetorical question... of course. Unless the attacker hears something like "Yes officer, I'm at the corner of 23rd street and Main right now, your patrol car is going to turn towards me in a few seconds?", I'm pretty sure they're vulernable.

Incidentally, I'd say a woman, or anyone listening to an iPod or any other musical device would make an easy target for any type of assault, moreso than cell phones.. think about it. You're listening to your favorite song at the highest volume setting possible, not the sneaky footsteps and malicious snickering of the fellow with the bat behind you.

"Oh baby can't you see, the-"

WHACK

Attacked--yes. Anytime a person is distracted by ANYTHING they are more vulnerable to attack that could potentially lead to rape.

Whether the attack IS rape is based on a case-by-case evaluation. Every woman who has been attacked wasn't raped, and every woman who likes talking on her cellphone won't be raped.

In some minds, talking on the phone is safer because people would know something is wrong. However, being distracted could be a major problem.

Females are usually raped by people they know, not random predators on the street who see a distracted women. Male or female, though, you are more likely to get mugged talking on a cell phone. Be aware of your surroundings.

First of all, don't give anyone any ideas. There is enough evil in the world without you helping an idiot "think" of something else to do to society.

I use my phone so my family will be listening if something happens in the dark of night. One night I was putting groceries in the car and a bag of groceries spilled out and started rolling under the car and toward the next car. I yelled "Stop you little S.O.B." and cut off the phone in mid conversation. My grandma paniced and thought I was being attacked. I told her S.O.B. was my noun for stuff. MF was my noun for person...so I wasn't being attacked! To top that off, a guy happened to be talking to me. I had to explain to him I was dropping groceries and on the phone. Then I had to explain to Grandma I was safe, but the groceries were "cruising for a bruising"!

I don't know for sure but I know if I were in that situation, I would not be on the phone. I would want to be on the lookout and be aware what is going on. I don't want to look vunerable or distracted, which would make me a target. I think it is better to be safe than sorry in this sort of situation and stay off the phone.

Well, it is true that rapists are looking for women that are distracted but a cell phone could alert the person on the other end that something is wrong. I would say it depends on the rapist.

I would think a woman talking on a cell phone would scare a rapist of because she could yell for help

Very true. Distraction is a key factor for predators. It was on AMW a few weeks ago. Lock your car at all times, even going in to pay for gas.

Very much so! They appear more vulnerable, an easier "mark" and are perceived as less likely to put up a fight.

To the women out there; please, please be as aware of your surroundings as possible while making a call, or hold off till you're in a safe secure place.
