Folder Lock is fast file-security software that can password-protect, lock, hide, and encrypt any number of files, folders, drives, pictures, and documents in seconds. Locked files are undeletable, unrenamable, unmovable, hidden, and inaccessible. You can lock, scramble, or encrypt depending on speed and security. Folder Lock is fully portable, so you can protect your files on USB flash drives, disks, CD-RWs, notebooks, and hard disks, and it doesn't require installation on another PC.

Depends what kind of document.. word has built in protection that you can look up. For anything else.. and even word documents.. I would just zip the file and add a password to it. It's built into XP, just right click the folder or zip file you want to lock down and the options are on the menu and in the properties.

I always simply change it to a different file format that just can't be opened unless someone figured out you changed it. like.mp3 and they think it's just not working. Certhinly the quickest way, just change it back when you wanna upen it. If you're in Xp just password your account in control panel then put the lock out time to one minute, if you leave the screen idle for that it's locked with your password. Good luck

If you have winzip or winrar, you can archive the files to a password locked file.
Or you can download folder lock, and this will password lock a directory for you.

You can password protect MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel) docs so that you need a password to open them.
Use the file - save options (e.g. on 'save as') and go to tools - security options to save as protected.
