.......it seems that suspension is not the solution,
will he sink to the bottom of class
or will the problem just dissolve on its own?

In my years of teaching I have not seen many problems evaporate on their own. They will suddenly react when some unexpected catalyst enters the equation. A buffer may be required to keep the balanced reaction from exploding into an uncontrolable exothermic release of energy.
