Digital Subscriber Line. It depends on where you live. The thing is that your local telephone company owns the phone lines and equipment in your area. Anyone else you buy it from is going to be reselling their service. The deregulation act required the phone companies to provide their services to competitors for lower prices and since they don't have the overhead of maintaining the lines and equipment, they can sell at lower margins and make money.. So, an individual who owns nothing can file for a license and call himself a phone company or DSL company. When you by from AOL, Earthlink, or anyone besides your local company, you are actually buying the same thing.
