"This show is humiliating, immoral and the best example of bullying, discrimination and hate..everything that is wrong with the world today. We teach our children not to make fun of and hurt other people, but then we show this rubbish on television and act like it is perfectly fine to purposely hurt other people.. just as long as 'cool' and 'well-liked' people are the ones dishing it out. They not only criticize other's musical talents, but they criticize their physical appearance. I'm tired of hearing someone from this show get made fun of because of obesity, I heard one former winner/contestant (a woman that now has a regular job on the TV Guide Channel) call another girl a "beached whale" because she was a full-figured woman. That's disgusting, and it should not be tolerated. There is a difference between constructive criticism and bullying.. and this show more often than not takes it a step too far."

I agree. I was just watching it & it turned my stomach. I hate the rudeness & snickering....it's just terrible the way they humiliate, giggle & laugh at people right in front of the contestants faces. I never want to watch it again!

Not everyone will agree with me, but I feel that the show HAS to be critical and yes, even abusive sometimes. The BIG danger of American Idol is that it degenerates into nothing than a talent show. The bottom line has to be there, a constant reality check that 'this is for real' and the winner is going to get a recording contract.
As a result, since commerciality is a major factor, LOOKS DO MATTER. no self respecting teenager is going to buy a CD with the "fat yellow bunny lady" on it or with 'the panther guy' on it.
If these people truly think they can look like a beached whale wearing clothes from Goodwill and make it in the ever style conscious music industry, they have a shock coming to them.
Simon is cutting... but what music producer isn't? If they can't handle the criticism of Simon and friends, I just don't think they will be able to handle the industry anyway. Any actor or artist should know that you express yourself thru your looks, your clothes, your hair etc and so .... you are fair game!!!!

I think that what you say is true to a certain extent. They can be rude and hurtful, but I think it is mostly reserved for those who come on and don't take it seriously enough. You have folks who have to know they don't belong there and look for attention by doing some really stupid things, like dress up like a banana. When you go to Idol, you know what you're going to get. If this is a problem, don't audition and don't watch. Unfortunately all of that nastiness makes for good TV. To say that the contestants should watch their language would be nice, but in real life people aren't controlled that way. Many people in America are not tolerant of people's differences, whether it be because of weight or whatever. It's not nice and it's not fair, but it happens. Sometimes they go to far because the contestants refuse to take the nicer no for an answer.

I disagree partially, because not all contestants get "judged" on their appearance, I've seen some people who may seem tacky to the judges but they have a gorgeous voice, and they make it through to Hollywood. I don't think it's all based on appearances though because some people just come on the show when they know that singing is NOT for them, people with like squeaky voices and stuff, I'm not being rude but that's how people humiliate THEMSELVES. Other than that it does get a little rude sometimes when the judges make fun of the way people dress, but come on, one guy walks in wearing an astronaut suit and dancing like a maniac, then they've got to say something.
The show is ment to be for entertainment, so they just add some bits here and there, but the people may have a part in humiliating themselves. I agree with you Cat!

I heard that all the contestants have to sign a contract stating that they understand they will get bullied and critisized. If people think this is bad taste then don't watch. I think it is pure entertainment and no different than any other reality show out there or talk show for that matter. People humiliate themselves for the stupidist things look at Maury Povich.

Well it's sad that appearance is so much a part of being an "idol" to young kids in America these days, but it is true.
