wal-mart is a good place plus they give u an extra contract. Yes they r worth it and they work good. Every thing you need is in the package but it is hard to get the package to open(LOL). If u don't have small ears then you'll want to buy some different headphones. Plus it holds only 200. So if i were u i would get the nano 4GB it holds 1000 songs.

I just got a 1GB iPod Shuffle. It's my first and I didn't want to pay a lot either. I went to www.apple.com and clicked on the Store tab. Scroll down and on the left in the gray area you'll see a link for refurbished iPods. Click that and there'll be a list of refurbished iPods. Mine cost $59, had free shipping and arrived in two days. It comes with every thing you need for it. I'm really enjoying mine.
Here's the link if you want to go look:

I was looking at the other answers and my iPod lets you change songs. You can have it play in order or random songs and there is a control for moving forward or backwards through the song list.

I don't think iPods are worth getting. I mean a lot of people have them and iPods are popular. I don't think it's worth it because people who own one always encounters problems with the iPods. But if you want an iPod, don't get the shuffle; it doesn't hold that many songs...well it depends on how many songs you're going to put in though.

I dont like it because you cant change song's and I like having the screen. As the way prices go if your a student I believe Apple will give you a discount and I would also try www.newegg.com (They sell all things computer and more)

apple.com

Or you can get refurbished iPods for less... they come with a full warranty:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=2ACE5063&nclm=Certified
Whichever you purchase, I also recommend getting the extended coverage from AppleCare:
