older people started smoking when the were younger and it wasnt a proven fact that they could kill you, younger people start because of peer pressure, or rebelion. people then try to justify the act of smoking by telling themselves that it doesnt kill everyone that does it, just some people. i used to smoke alot, now i cut back to about 2 or 3 a day, at most. i do it because it just lets me relax and think about certain situations, but my advice would be to never even think about doing it once... they are more addictive than heroin, and the hardest thing to quit.

because when u start smoking at the age of 12 u really don't care about what's going to kill u because u think you'll live forever at that age. The next thing you know it's been a few years and u think everyone is crazy for saying that it's going to be hard for u to stop smoking. Then one day your 24 and answering a question about why do people smoke, while wondering....why do i still smoke?

Because it's addicting and you have no idea how addicting unless you smoke. I smoke and I like it. We're all gonna die anyway. There are enough pollutants in the air to give a person lung cancer anyway. Why do people drink coffee everyday? Caffeine is a drug and is not good for people either. There are many things people do that aren't good for them and they still do it. Alcohol kills brain cells and destroys your liver but people go out and get wasted every weekend or more. It's no different.

It's highly addictive and very hard to quit. I used to smoke and tried very hard for a long time to quit. But I managed to quit and stay quit. I don't have any problems with it now, because I know that if I still smoked, I would pollute the air my 5 month old baby breathes. Now the odor of smoke gags me.
I think most people don't find--or try to find--good motivation to quit because it's so addictive. Many people give up before they even try to quit because they just assume that they'll fail or just go back to smoking.

I'm a smoker. It is the only regret I have in this life. I have smoked for 14 years and I am only 27. I wish I could stop. I know every non-smoker is just like quit. It is not that easy. It is a proven fact that herion is easy to quit than cigarettes. Now it is such a part of my life I am afraid to be without it. Soon I will quit though. I will quit for myself and giving me a healthier life. Smoking is stupid. That is the only thing to say. It is a serious addiction and one that is not easy to quit. Please don't judge smokers. It is bad and they know it is bad. Unless you are in their shoes remember you don't know. It takes a lot of will power to stop smoking. It takes more than just that too. Try and have some understanding. Everyday I smoke I know it can kill me. That scares me. One day I hope I find the strength to quit.

Why do so many people keep snorting cocaine when they know it kills them? The same to be said for alcohol, unprotected sex, living in LA ... and the list goes on.
I'd like to know why so many people are concerned about cigarette smoke when they SHOULD be concerned about all the HARMFUL preservatives and hormones put into our food supply (will kill you faster than cigarettes will), not to mention the hordes of problems with the pharmaceutical industry and the mental health people.

The are simply addicted to it. Just like some people are addicted to over-eating. Well, are you addicted to over-eating? "I can't figure that out." If you over-eat, you are killing yourself at a faster rate than if you smoke cigarettes. Proof: Few people under 50 die of lung cancer. However, dying of a heart attack is no longer uncommon for people in their late 30s and early 40s.
(No, I am not a smoker. But, I do over-eat. When I said, "are you addicted to over-eating, I was talking to myself (ridiculing myself).

We also know that high cholesterol kills a lot of people, but we still love McDonald's, don't we? We know that the emissions of...whatever our cars and factories emit are influencing the weather in a bad way, but we still drive cars and build more factories. And I am sure that there is one thing that you do everyday without needing doing it and that might harm you, but you won't stop, will you? Now, I can't figure THAT out.

I can't speak for everyone that smokes, but I smoke because my father pointed at me and told me not to start smoking, but here he was with a cigarette in his hand at the time. I continue to smoke because if I'm going to die (and I know I will), I'm going to die happy.
