Any organism with mitochondria performs respiration. This includes all animals, many plants (perform both photosynthesis and respiration), and some other organisms. It is simply the process of taking in oxygen and releasing it as CO2 (carbon dioxide). Using oxygen, cells can release the chemical energy in fuel (food).
