My personal favorite albums of the 1980s are Panorama by the Cars, Once Upon a Time by Simple Minds and Flowers in the Dust by Paul McCartney. Around about 1983-85, you had some single-heavy albums, like Purple Rain by Prince, Innocent Man by Billy Joel, Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen, Big Bam Boom by Hall and Oates, Like a Virgin by Madonna and She's So Unusual by Cyndi Lauper. Oh yes and something called Thriller.

Depends on your tastes . . . Guns n Roses, Judas Priest, The Police, Def Leppard, Depeche Mode, Madonna, Huey Lewis and the News, Genesis, Human League . . . . etc. There were hundreds of successful bands, and some styles didn't survive past the 90's.
