Yes I do know that people used to believe your heart stopped when you sneezed but people have continued to say God Bless you anyways out of tradition/habit. People can't tell when I sneeze so I have always just said excuse me the same as if I had burped.

i've read this in some article before.. in the ancient times, people believed that when a person sneezes, bad spirits come out of him, and they say 'bless you' so that the spirits won't go back to him.. or something like that...

In ancient times, it was believed that the soul left your body when you sneeze and that evil spirits could then enter. Blessing you was supposed to prevent this.

They believed your soul was at jeopardy, and to ward off the evil spirits they would say Bless you. That is also why they began to cover their mouths when a yawn comes upon you....to not let anything inside, while you yawn.

I've heard that centuries ago people used to believe that your soul temporarily escaped from your body when you sneezed. Therefore, people would say "bless you" to ensure that the devil wouldn't take your soul.

Way back in the day, people would say "bless you" because they thought that was your body's way of ridding itself of demons.

Does it matter? They're being polite.
I say it more like "blesh you".
