When I flush, the water doesn't drain out. It just rises all the way to the lid. Then it will slowly drain out entirely. I've tried plunging and nothing has changed. If I flush again within five minuets, dirty smelly water comes up through the bathtub.

You need to call a plumber. If you're using a septic tank, it could be overflowing and it may be time to empty (or you may need to start using yeast more often to keep the bacteria that prevents build up alive and healthy).

You could also try using an auger (go to your local home improvement store or a walmart) to unclog the toilet, if a clog is infact your problem.

You will also need to steralize your tub before using it again.

if it's backing up into the tub you have a blockage in the pipe, not just in the toilet. I would pull the toilet and auger the line out from there. If you have a septic tank, yes it could be full. But if the other drains in the house are working I would doubt this is the problem. If you don't have access to a drain snake another option may be to pull the toilet and use a garden hose. Shove the hose in as far as you can or until you hit something, then turn the water on. They also make a tube you can put on the hose that will blast pressurized water into the drain. It swells up, blocks off the pipe and the water breaks up the clog if you're lucky. Most home improvment stores carry them.

If you choose this option, pay attention to the water in the tub, if it keeps rising, it's not clearing the drain. Just make sure you put the bulb in as far as you can. Your toilet would require either a 3" or 4" bulb, make sure you get the right size. If the pipe is extremely clogged snaking would be the best option.

Your main sewer is clogged. Depending on your location, and the age of the house, there should be a clean out located somewhere outside the house. It could be a white PVC pipe, sticking out of the ground, or it could be black cast iron with a brass lid. If you have a clean out, use a pair of pliers to remove the cap. Takje care when you unscrew this cap. If the sewer is backed up severly, removal of this cap will allow raw sewage to spew up out of the pipe, as the pressure relieves itself from the main sewer. This will allow the sewage to stop backing up into your bathtub, since it is the lowest drain in your system. Most common reasons for main sewer stoppages are roots, large amounts of waste paper, items flushed down the toilet, that aren't intended to be flushed, children throwing toys into toilet, or collapsed pipes. A sewer machine is the most effective tool for removal of stoppages. Depending on the "head" on the end of the snake, a plumber can determine what is causing the problem. A camera, with a line locator, can tell a plumber exactly where the stoppage or break has occured, and even how deep the line is. If you don't know any plumbers, ask your friends if they know one they would recommend. Check the Better Business Bureau for contractors. Once you find a plumber, ask questions over the phone, before he drives out, about his rates, any trip charges, or hidden costs. Good luck to you!

You need to snake it. Or maybe you can dump potsfull of boiling water down it to either soften the clog up enough to it will push thru.. It sounds like a clog at the junction where the tub does not drain either because of it. Too much TP?

You need to "snake" your plumbing. I know, I had the same problem! RotoRurter (not sure about the spelling) is about the best price if you can't do it yourself.

Partially plugged drain pipe. Drain-o, Bleach, or warmweather should clear it up!
