I was thinking about using a sep funnel and vacuum filtration

You do not say what you mean by active extraction. I would boil the mixture in water and attempt to recrystallize 1-naphthoic acid from hot water, following filtration of the sand.

Perhaps you mean use of a Soxhlet extractor. This is a piece of glass apparatus in which the 1-naphthoic acid/salt/sand mixture sits in the pocket, while solvent fliows over it. Solvent continually boils up from the bottom, the liquid flows over the solid to be extracted, and the overflow solvent, containing the extracted material, drains down into the distillation pot to be redistilled.

Is that what you had in mind?
