...began to sound incoherent. Sorry, it's just I don't think one word is going to cut it, if you want description unless your teacher specified ONE word=)
...were embarrassingly unclear.
....no longer sounded like English.
....came out as grunts rather than words.
....were indistinguishable from my laboured breathing.
