As an animal lover, I'd have to suggest a live trap so you can catch him and release him somewhere else... perhaps on the back porch of someone you don't like. :D

But if you HAVE to use a regular trap, try baiting it with peanut butter. That way they have to stay there longer to eat it and can't steal it from the trap.

Use peanut butter(it really does work better) on the trap instead of cheese so that they cant just grab the goods and run for it. If it is a rat you need a rat trap not a mouse trap, they are not big enough and the rat can grab the goods without actually stepping on the trap to set it off. Or keep the rat as a pet, the rat thinks you make a great owner cause you feed it so well. :)

If the rat is brown it is probably wild, but if it is any other color it is someone's pet and lost. Please make sure that it is a wild rat before you use a lethal trap...

Use peanut butter on the trap and place the trap under your bed with the peanut butter end nearest the wall. Rats use their whiskers to "see" in the dark and stay very close to the walls. If you put the trap in the middle of an open space it may be too afraid to go into the open.

Please check the trap often, as some rats are smart enough to trip traps and steal your bait, but may get caught but not killed. If this does happen toss a towel over the rat and the trap and either let it go outside or dispatch it as quickly and humanely as possible.

Please do not throw it in the toilet to drown or outside to freeze, just because they are not welcome in your home doesn't mean that they should be treated with disgust.

There are two differences between rats and mice.

Rats are, generally, larger
They have a worse PR problem, though mice aren't usually loved.

In any case, it looks like your rat has figured out how to get around
the trap - so you need another TYPE of trap.

the rat is obviously in that room. theres only one logical solution. Have you ever seen "Mouse House?" go rent it. the scene with the mouse traps? copy it.

Peanut butter is a better bait since its hard to get off or you can put out poison(dont worry they dry up from it ) If you can get the one called Bromine it really works

Please, don't kill it. I just want's food. Make a trail of cheerios (snaped in half) leading out the front (or back) door, and then close the door after it go's out. There you go! The problem is solved; no animals killed!

either get your cat(if you have one) to hunt it, or get the rat control specialist person, or whatever they're called, to get it.
