Not sure what you mean by "first nations", but french fur trappers operated along the mississippi river and up into Canada as early as the 1650's I believe.

1500s - once the New World was discovered, there was no delay in gathering resources. Colonies were already established by the early 1600s (Quebec 1608). Fur traders were here prior.
