Get all the information you can from family members. births deaths marriages where they lived, etc. Check genealogical web sites to see if you are connected to people that other people have traced. When I did mine I found my great grandmother's family had been traced back to 1650. If that doesn't work there are census and immigration records available on line. There are also sites that help that charge a fee.
