Muscle cells come from precursor cells called myocytes. These cells join together to form myotubles that then become muscle fibers. Muscle cells are capable of mitotic cell division until a person reaches maturing age. At that time the skeletal muscles become trapped the the G1 stage of the cell cycle, sometimes called the G0 stage because they do not divide. (see your biology book for information on this stage).
Growth of these fibers can occur through the administering of hormones (growth hormones or androgens) or from placing a weight type of stress on them. By working the muscle fiber, it grows larger. As the fiber increases in diameter, it reaches a point when the fiber splits long wise into two fibers. Each of these fibers are capable of growth. The skeletal musle fibers each have many nuclei along the outer part of the fiber so that when the fibers split, there are still lots of nuclei on each fiber. Muscle growth can continue like this until the muscle body is quite large.. For example, the muscle of body builders. One must use caution in using steroids because of undesirable side effects. One such effect is the increase in feminine hormones and development of feminine characteristics when the natural androgen hormones of the body cease to be produced.
