Over the Mountain, Randy Rhoads, from the good ol' days with Ozzy. His frenetic playing style is energizing to listen to. Nobody has filled the void he left when he died.

Best Riff-(I Can't Get No)Satisfaction by Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones. It just plain rocks, but it's simple enough for a beginner guitarist to play.
Best Solo- Eruption by Eddie Van Halen of Van Halen. A minute and forty-three seconds of pure fiery guitar estacsy

Best solo - Stevie Ray Vaughn - Little Wing (instramental) stunning, who needs the lyrics sung! best riff I think is a toss-up between Bowie's Rebel Rebel and Chuck Berry's Johnny Be Good - both simple riffs but manage to carry whole mood of the track.

David Gilmour's solo out from "Comfortably Numb" - remember, The Wall (dated as it now is) was released in 1979 at the tail end of the British Punk explosion and the beginning of the Post-Punk/New Wave movement. Now I happen to prefer those later styles of music over "classic rock," but I still give Gimour the nod here.
At the time it seemed that guitar heroes were things of the past and guys like Syd Vicious were the wave of the future. Pink Floyd was considered one of the most "pompous" of the older rock bands because of their concept album work - (there's a famous story about Johnny Rotten getting the job as singer for the Sex Pistols because he'd written "I Hate" on the front of a Pink Floyd t-shirt). Gilmour's solo was outstanding and powerful as a musical statement, but the song, the album and the style were so counter to what was sweeping the music that it could almost be considered "punk" in and of itself - Gilmour doing what he does best, without shame, regardless of the public perception of it.
He gets my vote for his outstanding solo that, I think, captured the essence of his guitar playing as well as the essence of the song and album on which it appeared, while standing in stark contrast to much of the music of the era.

Definately the solo in Hotel California by the Eagles. Not many bands come even close. It's a long one, but definately worth listening to because it's an emotional solo. Whenever I hear it I have to stop and listen because it's a very intricate solo.

In my opinion, the greatest solo is on Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven", with Jimmy Page doing the solo. In second place, it would have to be Ozzy Osbourne's "Goodbye to Romance", with the late Randy Rhoades doing an amazing job. The greatest guitar riff would have to be AC/DC's "Back in Black", with Angus Young doing the honors.

I like a lot of the strokes riffs and solos; Nick Valensi is one hell of a guitar player. If you can, download "You Only Live Once" by the Strokes. Nick's riffs are awesome and so is his solo.

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd
David Gilmour is the guitarist and its considered the best guitar solo ever! I would recommend you to listen 'Pink Floyd Pulse' concert version of Comfortably Numb, its an extended version or go for the original one from 'The Wall'.

Stairway to Heaven - by Led Zepplin
It is always attempted by a band but never really duplicated.
It was before it's time and timeless all at once!
A close second would be Back In Black by AC/DC - as soon as those first notes start, you know the song and the urge to belt it out hits ya!
