The car was outside during very cold weather. The door opened easily enough, but will not close now. We tried parking the car inside a garage and heating the door latch with a hair dryer, but that did not help.

Sometime the latch gets tripped to the closed position.
Try tripping the latch to the open position while holding up on the handle.

Try using a screw driver, or pen, or something to pry the latch mechanism open while holding the door handle up.

Both of the "jaws" need to be opened to alow the latch rod on the door pillar to enter it.

If it's already open, the "jaws" that is, with the door kind of closed, bump the door with your hip.

Use a foaming engine purifier in the latch first. whilst they're that previous the mechanisms get extraordinarily grimy and grimey. (My ninety six Mustang would not enable me in, the door locks would not turn! I bumped off them and then wiped sparkling them and popped them lower back in, which required removing the door panels) After the foaming engine purifier, then you definately can oil them with a stable oil. i actually use motor oil on my hinges, seems to final longer. conversing of hinges, is there a scrape alongside your door sil? if so, your hinge pins/bushings may be donning out (happens a lot on 2 door fords, i may be attentive to) making the door hit the sill particularly than the place it relatively is meant to bypass. changing the pins and bushings facilitates the baggy door issue.

Try WD-40 on the latch part on the side of the door that latches, also sometimes the latch catch flips back, you might have to flip it back with your finger.
