He tortured and murdered his way to the top and continued to murder anyone he thought might possibly take it from him. It is said that toward the end of his life he was so paranoid that someone would kill him that he slept in a different place in his house every night. Of course, he had good reason to think that someone might try to kill him. He murdered more than 20 million of his own people just to get and keep his power.

Well, first you kill anyone who might be strong enough to oppose you within your party or government. Then you kill all political opponents. If people step out of line, you torture them, kidnap their children, rape their wives and daughters, and kill them. The Stalin playbook has been used by other leaders since Stalin, including Slobadan Milosevic in Yugoslavia and Saddam Hussien in Iraq.

his power? you mean?
like any good dictator, he created agencies to kill his opposition.
"Stalin vastly increased the scope and power of the state's secret police and intelligence agencies."
"The government archives record that about 800,000 prisoners were executed (for either political or criminal offenses) under Stalin, while another 1.7 million died of privation or other causes in the Gulags and some 389,000 perished during kulak resettlement - a total of about 3 million victims."
"...others believe the number to be considerably higher."
Those are Wikipedia quotes.
