Ok-- I replaced my battery this weekend and my truck still won't start in the cold. It has been below zero here three straight days. I park my truck in a heated garage at night and it starts with no problem in the morning, but I get to work and the truck cools off and won't start. However, if I turn the headlights on the truck starts right up. Why does it start when I turn the lights on and what could my problem be?

Thanks for the lights explanation. The truck is a 1998 V6 4.2 liter and the truck just clicks when I turn the key without the lights. Thanks all.

My electronics instructor told us that when you turn your headlights on for a short time, the internal resistance of the battery heats it up; thus making the battery more powerful in cold conditions. Does it at least turn over without the headlights? if it does i'd say battery amperage.

when you turn on the lights,it energises the battery.sounds like you need a battery with more cold cranking amps.

IT'S A FORD and in cold weather they are about as worthless as anything made. Time to buy a chevy, the most dependable cold weather starting vehicle ever made.
