Would it not be better to say something like God bless the sick, poor and starving of our world. This would at least give people around the world the impression that Americans care for them rather just caring for themseves.

We spend billions of dollars on you people, both governmental and personal and all you can do is complain that a few speeches are ended with God bless America. Let me tell you something buddy, if it weren't for us you all would be in a worse place than you are right now. There are Americans buried all over the world that fought for your sorry *** to keep it free. Quit complaining.

A Presidential speech is for one purpose. To convince the American public of whatever message he was trying to convey.
By finishing the speech with "God bless America" is a propagandists masterstroke. It leaves a positive taste to the speech, even if the speech was full of lies and misconceptions, who can disagree with his last words. "God bless America" confuses potential arm chair critics who don't have enough intelligence to understand why it is there.

I am American and never finished my speeches with God Bless America. I ran for class president in eighth grade too.

I'm not a fan of Bush. Hate his guts, in fact. But he is the President of the Unites States of America. So his speeches better be about America, or he's not doing his job.

Do yo unot want God's blessings for America? I know I do. I just hope our behavior merits God's blessings. I would find it rather odd if an American political leader asked for God's blessings for foreign countries.

You got it. I am from the States and I am ashamed of the way many (if not most) of the people here are behaving lately. Who cares if we condone torture? Who cares about the environment? Who cares if we alienate the rest of the world? Who cares if the poor want to come here, they are draining our resources, except it's OK to exploit them where THEY live. Your answer is the person making the speech DOESN'T care. I TRY to explain that I consider myself a human being before an American, but it is a long, uphill battle before most will "get it".

Nice one, trouble_54157. You know absolutely nothing about this person asking the question, but they are supposed to kiss our *** for making their life better? No wonder we are alienating the whole world.

American's believe that if every place on earth were like America, or part of America, that there would not be the kind of sick, poor, starving, etc etc that you see in other parts of the world today.

I tend to agree with that assumption. If I were God, when someone from a 3rd world country prays to me for relief, I think my response would be to give America the strength to help that country.

Because America's founding fathers created our government with God in mind. By saying God Bless America we are asking for God's approval on our choices/actions.

It's a sop to the religious-right voters, who believe 2 things:
1. god dabbles in international politics
2. god favors the US over every other country

Presidents saying that to end their speech helps keep the religious-righters on their side, and voting for them.

Since, however, there is no evidence of any kind that:
-- there is any such thing as god
-- that even if there were, "he" doesn't do anything about international politics
-- that even if there were, "he" doesn't favor the US in any way

...then what these presidents are really doing is simply feeding delusional people.

What makes the US a great country is its constitution, its rule of law, its promise of freedom and liberty for ALL, and the people that follow that constitution. That we often do so poorly at living up to the ideal set in our constitution is sad, but at least the religious right hasn't been able to re-write the constitution...:)
There's hope for us yet.

"God bless America" is a statement that I think stems from the Cold War where Americans tried to differentiate themselves from the "godless" communists.
