I just recently starting working assisting a busy housekeeper doing the vacuming and dusting-she does the majority of the work bathrooms, kitchens and mopping the floors. Most of the homes we do are large-3000-4000Sq.feet . She charges 40.00 an hr. What do you think is a fair rate in paying me?

Minimum wage up to $8 and hour. Especially since you are just assisiting. Since there are other hidden expenses that she has that you do not see. If she takes taxes out of your wage and has to pay workmans comp on you, which is higher for residential cleaners, if she pays you $8 an hour she is actually paying out $12 - $14 an hour

There are a lot of variables to take into account. Does she buy the supplies and equipment? Does she pay to advertise? Does she pay the tax & licensing? Does she provide the transportation? Sure, that $40 /hour looks good on paper. But I would lay odds that all of the expenses come out of that. Can you, or anyone, show me where life is fair? Just be thankful that you have the ability to do anything.

You should be happy making minimum wage - especially if she does the bulk of the work and you're the one assisting. Sure she's charging 40 an hour, but take into consideration she has to buy supplies, pay for transportation (not just gas, but upkeep on the vehicle), pay taxes, she might have a family to take care of, babysitters/daycare to pay for, or she could be sending money to someone in need. Keep in mind just because she's charging 40 an hour doesn't mean she's actually making 40 an hour.

Simple. Minimum hourly wage. The real question should be, how long 'til you start your own cleaning business?
