You want a few things in particular: lessons, reliable repair, and ability to "test drive" the machine you are looking at, none of which you can get at Walmart. There's nothing WRONG with the machines at Walmart, just there's no one to help you if you have problems or questions. If you're just starting out, one of those machines is going to be a good beginning, but if you get into sewing a lot your'e going to want to upgrade your machine pretty quickly.

If you want to re learn all by yourself, a brother or singer from Walmart would be fine, and cheap.

If you think you really would get into it more, look at a Bernina or other machine sold at a sewing machine dealer, who would likely have classes for you to join and learn things from. I know Bernina would NEVER sell their machine without giving you classes in how to use it, and it does not cost any extra (the machines are expensive though!)

Dummies books are good with information on how to, but if you really want advice, visit a dealer and ask lots of questions, you may want a quality machine if you really end up liking to sew.

You can buy a good beginner sewing machine at Wal-Mart that costs anywhere from 80-250 dollars. I have the one that costs about $125, that has 24 stitches. You want to make sure that it comes with a button whole setting if you are wanting to sew clothes. If you want to do any embroidering or quilting you want to make sure the feet can be dropped below the plate or that it comes with a darning plate. If you plan on doing any piecing or quilting you should also buy a 1/4 inch foot. This will insure a constant 1/4 seam. This costs about $15 dollars and can be bought at a sewing store.

My wife is also clueless about sewing. But at Christmas we bought a Brother sewing machine from Walmart for $80 and she likes it very much. We had a hard time finding books that were easy to understand but one we liked is "Sewing For Dummies". Actually, all those "...For Dummies" books are excellent! I have Dieting, Chess, Food and Nutrition...For Dummies books and they are all very well written and full of great information.

Good luck! I hope this helps! Keep your thumb away from the needle!

There is a lot of choice when it comes to machines. My personal preference is the Brother machine, you can pick one up at your local WallyWorld or they even have them at Target now too. They are inexpensive compared to some models and are wonderful workhorses! It will get you all the basics you need in a machine plus a few extras.
