My theory:
We all know the ocean is much too deep for humans to explore as of now. Now even though WE can't reach it, it's perfect for depth dwelling creatures that don't travel into shallow waters. I believe prehistoric fish such as the Megaladon do exist, as well as other things that can't be explained through science. Just because you don't SEE something, doesn't mean it's not there.
I like the phrase "I've never seen a million dollars. Does that mean it doesn't exist?"

In 1918, Australian naturalist David Stead recorded events when local fisherman refused to go back out to sea after an unbelievably massive shark had demolished their gear and taken their catch. These were experienced men of the sea, familiar with whales and large sharks, but whatever they had seen had frightened them so much that they refused to work. According to Stead, they described it as between 35 and 90 meters long and pure white in color. These proportions seem unbelievable. Could a shark really grow to that size? Were these men exaggerating? Or, were they just confused? Or, was this a Megalodon sighting? If it wasn't a Megalodon shark that had frightened them, what else could it have been?
Massive Shark Threatens 55-Foot Fishing Boat
In the 1960’s the captain of a 55-foot fishing ship reported that a white shark at least as long as the boat passed by while they sat at anchor. The crew refused to officially discuss the sighting, but the Captain gave his account. An experienced sailor, the Captain would have been able to recognize a whale if that is what it had been, but he claimed it was indeed a giant shark.

Hmmm. Anything's possible I suppose, but I doubt it. But as lil miss agony said there is that fish that bigins with c.... (Coelacanth by the way - caught at the mouth of the Chalumna River, South Africa just before Christmas, 1938). However, I think someone might have noticed a 40 - 80 foot shark swimming around.

There is no concrete evidence that they do.
The only support that exists for the idea that they are still around is that some of the teeth found seem to date to only ten thousand years ago (a relatively small time, geologically speaking) and a very few fragmentary sightings by untrained people.
So we have more evidence that the dodo still exists (it doesn't) than we do that megalodons still exist, and only slightly more evidence of megalodons than, say, the abominable snowman.
Now, don't get me wrong - I'm not saying they're absolutely not there. One has only to say 'coelacanth' to raise the possibility of their continued existance. But I wouldn't bet on it, for sure.

Some scientists still think so, I'd like to believe it the hope of seeing one some day on film. Must be huge....in the mean time you'll have to settle with the great white being the closest relative.
Note to lil miss agony above....
Sharks/Crocs changed very little so no way of saying; it's a big water mass to check for x
