some of these ppl writing here are idiots, theyve only heard about the cubs spending a ton of money but tthey dont think theyve gotten better???
ok, ill go over everything
we know that their offense is potent with soriano in there. they are a very powerful team with soriano, ramirez, lee, jones, floyd, and barrett. defensively they are fine with a few gold glove caliber players
pitching ppl are saying that they suck-ummm, ur wrong. rotation is fine bc 1. zambrano 2. lilly 3. marquis (can easily come back from where he was 2 years ago) 4. Hill (did decent last year for a rookie year, just needs more innings) 5. prior (even if hes not healthy, the cubs pulled up so many pitchers from the minors last year that theyll be fine for 5th starting role bc of their experience)
the thing that really got me pissed was where some person wrote that their bullpen sucks...nooooo way. they were solid last year. last year, they picked up scott eyre and bob howry and they were fantastic. dempster was problematic but wood could fill in and do perfect and if not wood, put howry in.
cubs are contenders for everything this year...do not count them out

No, the Cubs cannot win the National League this year. They are missing the one BIG key ingredient, pitching, or what's even better is proven pitching. Prior and Wood can't stay healthy, Wood never will be able to. If you stay in Chicago and look at the White Sox when they won the World Series, they didn't have a huge explosive offense, they had 4 pitchers who at any time could go out and throw a complete game. The Cubs don't have that. Really, right now, the cubs only have one thing going for them. A couple of hitters, (Lee, Soriano, Ramirez) in a big hitter park.

The Cubs have very little chance of winning the National League Central, so imagine the seemingly-insurmountable odds of winning the entire league.
It all starts with pitching. Who besides Zambrano is effective and durable? Can crybaby Rich Hill develop into a decent starter?
Next, there's the Soriano factor. He won't be a problem in April, and perhaps not even in May, but if the Cubs are, well... the Cubs, in June, he could divide the locker room.
Of course, the Cardinals are in the NL Central, so the Cubs also have to deal with shrewd GM Walt Jocketty making another wizardlike deal to propel St. Louis into the playoffs yet again, most likely as division champs.
If the Cardinals once again take the Central, that only leaves the Wild Card as a hope for the Cubs to even make the playoffs. In the Central alone, there are the Astros and Brewers, both of whom have better pitching, as well as the despicable Reds, whose hitting is second only to St. Louis in the Central. Factor in that teams out West will be so closely-tied in the standings that the team who finishes second will likely be only 1 game back, and the Cubs not only have to deal with their own division but the entire West as well.
With all the problems the Cubs have to overcome, this is once again not their season.

Although the Cubs are a very improved team, they have to overcome not only the St. Louis Cardinals in their own division, but some much better teams in the National League to even get into the playoffs. Their big question this year will be how their pitching staff will hold up. There is little doubt that they will score a lot of runs with Aramas Ramirez and the addition of Alfonso Soriano. Unless the Cubs make an in-season trade for an established starter, I honestly do not think their pitching will be enough to take them to the top of the division.

There's a pattern developing in MLB. Since the years that the Yankees won the 3W.S. in a row, teams with little or no success are winning the Big One the following year.
The Diamondbacks
The Angels
The Marlins
The Redsox end their cursed drought.
The White Sox
All of this may point to the Cubs finally having that "Next Year" that Chicago has been talking about for 100 yrs now.
They've already done something that, in my opinion, has broken the curse. SPENT THE $$$$$$. Thank You J. Hendry.
The reason the Cubs have a shot at the pennant.......They've not only added talent to all areas of the roster, but they've renewed the spirit of Cubs fans by finally doing what it takes to be competitive.
GO CUBS!!!!!

Surprisingly yes,
There is a chance. They have a much better team this year. Also there is no great team in the National League. The Mets have very questionable pitching. The Cardinals were not very good(83 wins) and might have a worse pitching staff than last year. Houston will be weaker without Petitte and Clemens. The Dodgers are short on power. The Giants are old and thin. So the Cubs, if they can regroup and stay healthy, could win over 85 games and get into the playoffs.
If they get in the playoffs they have as good a chance as anyone to win.

The lineup is one of the best. Defensively, they will kick it around a bit. Soriano will end up getting moved from center to somewhere else. The big question mark was pitching. A question that was not answered. Marquis throws batting practice. Lilly is average. Don't bank on a healthy Wood or Prior. Just hope you saved enough money to resign Big Z after this year.

On paper, I agree... the Cubs look VERY good! But, they will probably find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory...AGAIN!
It hurts to say that, as I have been a Cubs fan since 1969
