CBS Radio's WARW-FM in D.C. Goes Green
WARW-FM, CBS Radio’s Classic Rock station in the nation’s capitol, is changing its colors and its format. In addition to broadening its format to include current Rock and recent Rock from the last decade as World Class Rock, the station is making a political statement, becoming the first “green” radio station in the U.S.
To go “green,” the Washington, D.C. station will operate using renewable energy to power its 50,000 watt signal and will purchase energy resources generated by wind. Station vehicles will be replaced with hybrid models and take a number of steps both on and off-air to promote ways for listeners to live an eco-friendly lifestyle.
As part of the moves, the station has renamed itself 94.7 The Globe and launched a new Web site at: www.947theglobe.com.
“It’s not often you can perfectly align great music with a message so central to your audience’s beliefs. Rock and ‘green’ is just such a winning combination, and now, more than ever, is the right time to evolve the station to ensure a successful run well into the future,” said Michael Hughes, senior vp of CBS Radio in Washington and general manager of WARW.
As a Classic Rock station, WARW-FM took a hit in the ratings when Clear Channel last year updated its traditional Oldies station, WBIG-FM, to a Classic Hits station.
