The biggest differences are in the regulations of our everyday lives. In the old days there mostly just criminal laws. You lived your life as you wanted as long as you were not breaking laws. If you did the sheriff enforced the laws as was seen fit. Now our lives are moderated more by civil code than criminal code. And they are enforced more by lawyers than law men. We are now regulated on nearly every small aspect of our lives. House builders have to follow thousands of retrictions, each product we buy has to pass thousands of tests or restrictions. Insurance companies regulate nearly every aspect of our lives in one way or another. Businesses are told how far apart they have to have bathroom stalls placed, and other trivial things, or they are sued. Sometimes this is good because it helps promote a better living for all, but usually it results in less choice for everyone.
