I thought I could just snap it back on, but it turns out that the part is attached by a metal piece that broke in two...=(

Sounds like you broke the timer knob shaft. the timer comes off from the inside of the control panel. You need to remove the screws holding the control panel in place. just be sure to unplug the electrical cord, remove 4 screws, (2 on each end) and your in. The timer will have 2 more screws holding it to the panel. The part number is on it too.

It's pretty easy if you can get a replacement part. However, please wear gloves while working on your dryer; there are sharp edges inside it, and you're likely to get cut if you're not carefull. You should be able to replace the knob with a few screwdrivers and a set of pliers and a socket set. The big thing is getting a replacement part; look on the internet with the model number of your drier. Take a polariod (or I guess digital) picture of the back where the wires connect so that you get them back in the right order. Not that hard to do, but you have to get it right. Good luck.

Have you tried super glue? Gel is better for .bigger hole
