why aren't there parachutes on planes instead of the jackets they have to keep you afloat in water???

foam is cheaper than parachutes. The parachutes would have to be unpacked and inspected regularly. Commercial planes travel way too fast and high for parachutes to be of much use.

because once you crash, the parachutes are useless.
