Yes definitely.
She carried the burden of Effie and did really well. I also like how she emotes in the movie just by little gestures - small twitching of the mouth and different gazes - that are small but creates huge impact. And she really shines, overshadowing the strong, more professional cast.
So it is more than just the singing. It is ridiculous for people to say that she wins or gets the nomination cos of her singing solely. Even when they sing in a musical, they have to act to bring out the emotion so that people can feel the song. So the fact that people can feel her is an evidence.
And to actually ACT WELL and SING WELL in a movie is simply not easy to do. And Hudson does it.

I think she deserves the nomination. Eddie Murphy should get one he was great! And for those of you criticizing the acting...you have to realize this is a play turned movie. It's a musical on film.

No, I hope not. I hate musicals and want Abigail Breslin to win. She was FANTASTIC in Little Miss Sunshine.

I don't think that movie should have been nominated for anything. None of them are believable as good actors.
