Consumables drive the printer industry. Give the printer away, and then charge for consumables. The manufacturer's COST for a typical inkjet cartridge is about $3.50 when you include marketing and sales fees. The retail price on that cartridge is $25. So, that makes the rest basically PROFIT! It's the same as CANS OF PEPSI and GILLETTE's RAZOR BLADES! They can AND DO charge anything they wish. It has very little to do with the COST to MAKE the ink carts. (DON'T DRIVE YOURSELF CRAZY THINKING ABOUT THIS!)

Well...ink is CHEAP. You should be saying "Why are cartridges so expensive" OK, they sell the printers cheap, but recover the money on a captive audience for cartridges. otherwise, printers are a 'loss leader'
I gave up with printer manufacturers/cartridges, Got an Epson, fitted a continuous ink supply, saved the cost of the Epson Printer with the ink costs of for CISS. UK prices, but get my drift, 600ml of ink = 45 carts = £20.00. At Epson prices, 45 X £6.50 = £280 (about that) So, I SAVED £260 new printer was £120, so even accounting for the printer, i still got £100 in my pocket.....

I use brand name ink only while the printer is under warranty. After that, unless you have a very expensive printer, I use generics.

I have tried many sites but so far have found
www.inkgrabber.com
to be the best deal.

try:
carrotink.com
#1_inkjet.com

many others. Just type Epson ink in the search bar and take a look. You may find yourself going to inkgrabber after all.

I have to disagree, ink cartridge refills may seem expensive, but the printing cost per page is still very low. I would guess that ink and paper are less than 5 cents per page for 'normal' text printing with some graphics. Photo printing may be 25 - 30 cents or so.

Ink is very expensive but good news, Kodak is coming out with an ink jet printer (EASYSHARE 5300 All-in-One Printer) in March in which you save "Save up to 50% on everything you print." The ink is so much cheaper, Black for 9.99, Color 14.99, and Black and Color for 21.99. After my ink ran out of my old dell printer, I deffinately need an upgrade.
