also how participating in class help us increase our mark!!

For two reasons. First, it is impossible to learn by osmosis. By participating in class, you allow the teacher to gauge where you are and tailor the lesson to your specific needs (as a class). This leads to a better understanding of the material.
Second, some subjects, the debate is more important than the actual lesson. For example, a lot of English classes are built on opinions, not objective facts like math and science.

participating in class lets the teacher know that you are paying attention and are engaged in the class.
Some teachers give a grade for this, although I do not see how to give a grade for this -- I don't give a participation grade in my 7th grade science class.

It helps to reinforce what you have and are learning. Simply put, you are reviewing. I know that not many like to participate, but it does help, but just dont be a know it all and answer every question...then the other kids just sigh in their head, and typically do not listen to what you say, unless you get it wrong.

Despite the whole "letting the teacher know you're listening part" there is also the aspect in which you learn from your classmates. You might ask a question that others have never thought of or offer a different opinion... thereby helping your classmates to broaden their minds.
