I may be moving to Chicago soon for a new job. The job would be located near O'Hare Airport, so I'd like to know about some of the best neighborhoods in that area (or fairly short commute) that are fairly safe in terms of crime, and aren't overly expensive. I know Chicago is more expensive than Cleveland....I have a very nice 2 bedroom apt. that I only pay $745/month for here, and I'd like to try and not go much over that in Chicago if I can....I'll be making slightly more money, so I could go a little higher in price if I have to in order to be in a nice, safe area. Thanks for any advice!

So far I'm getting pretty depressed with what I'm seeing. It seems like you can't get any nice 2 bedroom places for under $1200/month....I know I'll be making a little more money if I go to Chicago, but still....shelling out over $1,000 a month for an apartment seems crazy to me!
Plus, most apartments I'm seeing don't even have washer/dryer hook-ups, which is a must for me.

I know one thing....I'd like to be within a fairly short commute of the city of Chicago as I'd like to see the sights in downtown as much as possible.

Des Plaines also has some nice areas. And it basically has the airport in it's backyard. Itasca & Schaumburg & Bensenville are nice also as stated in an earlier answer. Maybe try looking for the Northern Suburbs a bit. Traffic is usually heading toward the North in the morning (the commuters), so if you are heading south then you should be ok. If you would like a really nice area that is a bit more expensive, try Park Ridge. I grew up in Elmhusrt which is pretty close to the airport. But it can be a bit more expensive also. It is a real nice area. Right next to Bensenville.

Your last comment - Ohare is not really that close to the 'Downtown' area. So if your coming that way you are probably going to be in traffic and the commute will not be a short one.

Look at Remington Place apartments in Schaumburg. It's located off 90 on Roselle Road, but there are ways to get to the airport w/o getting onto 90.

I would honestly look for a price of living comparison site, like http://www.cityrating.com/costofliving.asp for ideas. It is do-able, don't get discouraged. Chicago is about 20% more expensive to live in than Cleveland.

It's nice because it's close to shopping and dining near Woodfield Mall.

The complex is fairly quiet, or it was when I lived there 4 years ago. They have a pool and gym.

2 bedroom places will offer a deck or a den. I would go with the den. They have in unit washers/dryers. First floor will cost less.

Valli produce (about 3 blocks south) won't make you choke on produce costs (unlike Giant Eagle), but Jewel and Dominick's will be a disappointment in comparison.

Oh and Chicago is about 30 minutes from the apt complex in non-rush hour traffic

Good luck

As far as price goes, most places are over priced. The good news is that there is tons of public transportation (the Metra) and you migth be able to take a train to work.

the only ingredient i might upload is that it will matter precisely the place you will college. in case you will Roosevelt or the paintings Institute or someplace else in the Loop, any of the concepts would be ok simply by fact the L would be a at present shot. in case you will DePaul (Lincoln Park) or Loyola (Rogers Park), you will prefer to adhere near to the pink Line to shrink your trip, or maximum in all probability stay interior of walking distance on account that this is easy. Bucktown, Lincoln sq. or Logan sq. would be inconvenient. in case you will the college of Chicago, Hyde Park is the superb determination, however the Loop or maybe Lincoln Park may be ok, in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it relatively is form of of of a discomfort to take the L to U of C. UIC is in basic terms west of the Loop on the Blue Line, so lower back residing very interior of sight is superb, yet in any different case Bucktown isn't this variety of undesirable trip.

Check out Rolling Meadows or Bensonville. Both are near O'Hare and both decent places.
