LOL = laughing out loud
LMAO = lauging my *** off
They are used in instant messaging. Since the other can't actually hear or see you laughing... you type in LOL or LMAO to convey the fact that you are laughing or that you find something funny/amusing.
Another one commonly used is ROFL = rolling on the floor laughing.

they are used so that the reader will understand the emotions of the writer, so that they are less likely to misunerstand the intent of the words. It means that the writer is laughing out loud, not that he's telling YOU to laugh out loud.
If I said, "Yeah, right!" you might think that I was angry or sarcastic.
If I said, "Yeah, right!" LOL...you would know that I thought what you said was hysterically funny. Totally different meaning. It's my way of telling you on-screen that I'm joking, or being funny.

lol means "laugh out loud", one that I personally hate, just because who are they to tell me to laugh out loud? Mind your own business!! Not you of course. Just in general. But I'm not sure what Imao means. Maybe it's instant messaging a...blank. who knows? Hope I helped with the first one.
