I could not believe my eyes what I saw in Indonesia during my school days, when we visited a very large national bird park,
the giant eagle stood besides me. It was 8 feet tall & spread its wingspann to 12 feet.
A bird of 15 feet in size would be the largest bird known in the world today

mythology
There is a story dating back to the 1890's where two kids killed a thunderbird having a wingspan of about 12 feet.
I believe the origin comes from the Indians (Objibwa) and the tribes used to claim that the large wings sounded like thunder (hence where the name comes from).
There are numerous totem poles out west displaying both the bears (which exist today) and the thunderbird (which nobody has seen)
It is mythical as far as I know but these stories come from someplace right.
