You need four years to obtain an undergraduate degree, called a bachelor's, and three years to get a law degree, which is a doctorate. However, several universities, such as the University of Pennsylvania and George Washington University, have combined Bachelor of Arts/Juris Doctor (Latin for Doctor of Law) programs. That allows students to enter the J.D. program prior to completion of the B.A., thereby allowing them to get the B.A. and J.D. within a combined 6-year period during which the student must satisfy the usual credit hours for each degree.
