What you do is go pick out the ring, most jewelry stores usually just carry one size anyways. When you get it get a warranty on it, that will give you up to two sizes up or down. And replace missing stones or w/e other things pop up down the road.

If she wears any other type of ring, especially one on the ring finger of her right hand, take it to a jeweler. He can size it up. If she is right handed, you may want the size to be a little smaller since that finger will have a little more muscle on it. If she's left handed - a little bigger. Good luck!
By the way, most jewelers will allow you to have atleast 1 free resize if the ring doesn't fit the first time.

Ask a woman of similar size what size her ring is. Make it that size or a size larger. You can always get it sized down but not up.

I told mine that I heard of a new way to clean rings. I needed a ring from her and pointed to the one on a finger that I was planing to get it for. The problem is finding out what size it is before she wants it back!

Look for a ring that you see her wear on the finger you want the new ring for. When she's not around take the ring, place it flat on a piece of paper and draw the inside of the ring. Then take that to the jeweler. They should be able to use the sizer rings to figure out what size it is. Make sure to tell them you drew the inside of the ring, not around the outside.

Does she have any rings she isn't wearing today? If so you just take it to a jewelry place even some stores like Walmart/Kmart/Sears have jewelry counters. They have a sizer there to tell you. Now if you can't remove the ring from the house. Slip it on one of your fingers. Mark the place it stopped or remember it. Then when you go to the store they have ring sizer. Just slip a few on until it feels similar. Good Luck

Check her shoe size!!! It usually runs about the same size as her ring finger!

just buy her the ring you like in the stock size and have her take it in for sizing after she gets it. i know its not as romatic...but guessing her size and having to have it REsized if you werent right, is a real bummer. each time a ring is sized, the shank becomes weaker.not to mention that the first sizing is usually free, and additional sizings will cost you. especially if you have to go up in size, as the goldsmith has to add gold.

Look in her jewelry box. Find a ring she seldom wears. Take it to the jewelry store. They can measure it. Purchase surprise ring, and return borrowed ring to jewelry box.
