Respect is the way u want others to percive you. basically the standard u set for urself. if u do stupid things there's a high chance u will not get any respect. but vice versa

There are 3 levels of respect:

Disrespect
Courtesy (or LACK of disrespect - but also lack of respect)
TRUE respect

You asked about the definition of respect though so...
Respect is a feeling that the other person is a great person. A man is a real man. Honorable. Dutiful. Polite and courteous. Makes other people feel comfortable. If you believe all of that about the other person, then you respect them. You listen to what they have to say because usually they are right, or at least their perspective gives you something to think about.

Let me explain courtesy while I'm at it. Courtesy is simply treating everybody else the way they deserve. That is why it is important to not allow yourself to stop at this point in the way you treat your spouse or loved ones. If you simply treat your spouse with courtesy, then you aren't treating them any better than you treat rest of the world. You should put your spouse on a pedestal.
It is also noteworthy to let you know that men need TRUE respect more than love, especially from his wife or girlfriend. So if you want to make a man feel loved, respect him.

Why respect? Respect is a fundamental need in every one of us. Each of us needs to believe that we are worthy to at least someone. It is actually a way in which we measure ourselves. So if no one respects us, then we are very low human beings. It is central to our self-esteem.

pussccluvr, you are quite wrong. I’m afraid that your attitude towards the golden rule is a bit skewed. The golden rule is "do unto others you WOULD have done unto you." The way you described it has changed the golden rule into “Do unto others as they HAVE done unto you.” See the difference? It is improper to withold your respect until they show you respect, or earn it. If everybody had that attitude, no one would ever show respect. Since there are people with the attitude (unfortunately) someone has to start the process. Be that person.

We are all indeed entitled to respect. Read the book, Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs.
You quoted from the bible. Let me show you a quote.
Ephesians 5:33 "However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband."

Go ahead, read it in context. Men understand respect so we give it naturally to the women in our lives. Women understand love so they naturally give it to the men in their lives. We each are commanded to add to what we don't naturally give to our spouse. Each needs love and respect. And all are entitled to respect. Respect is a decision as much as love is.

first of all respect is not anything that any one is gauranteed to have throughout there lives . its not a right and its not anything that can be demanded I have heard people over the years say that they demand people to show them respect because they have earned that kind of respect do to there job title or there stature in life the one thing i do know for sure is i treat people the way i want to be treated i respect people who respect me do unto others as you would have done to you. the golden rule is right and to the point respect is given to those who respect you attitude is given to those who give attitude respect is given and recieved by men an women with high morals and those with high character qualities it makes a person feel good to be respected by there peers and the only reason they have respect is because they have given respect to there peers
