The baby book I used was awesome, and said you can't go by age, because babies don't all weigh the same thing at a given age, and their need for solids will be based on their weight, not their age.
Anyway... the bottom line was... once the baby is 12-14 pounds, they'll need some cereal to keep growing healthfully. Start there and then do what works for you and your baby. Take your doctor's advice, sure... but read up on this topic yourself and make a decision about how you will handle it.

My pediatrician said between 4 and 6 months. A good indication is that they start showing an interest in food - my 5 month old starting really noticing our food a few weeks ago.

The doc told me to wait until 4 mths. But,I know of a lot of people who start giving their babies cereal before 4 mths.

It is best to wait until a baby is 6 monthes old to introduce solids. Introducing foods before than can cause allergies in children which can last a lifetime. Wait!!!

My daughter first received cereal at 4 months. Our son wasn't satisfied with only nursing, so at 2 weeks we started giving him cereal from a spoon. Neither child ever had any problems from it, and our daughter (who was 5 at the time) really enjoyed helping mommy feed the baby!

4 to 6 months is what they are now recommending.
But solids should be added to the breastmilk or formula the baby is getting already (Not replacing)
I don't know if this is your thing or not...but I just found this excellent website on home made baby food...but besides recipes and stuff it has an excellent guideling and "sample" menu for starting out babies on solids.
Check it out. and good luck :)

2 months. she started sleeping through the night on her own at that age, so I asked the doc if I could put cereal in her bottle at night. She said yes, we we started with rice cereal in the bedtime bottle.
She started having cereal for breakfast around 4 months.

Start at around 4 months. Research also shows if you start no earlier than 4 months and no later than 6 months you reduce the risk of celiac disease and diabetes. Enjoy that little one! :)

Don't wait till 6 months. Your baby will sleep better and be overall happier once you start filling her little tummy with some real food.
