A coffee table's original design purpose was to support beverages, or more specifically coffee (hence the name) because coffee and tea were the upper-class drinks of the late 1600s/early 1700s when coffee tables started becoming popular. They originated in the Ottoman Empire, a place where tea gardens and coffee bean growers are quite common.

A coffee table is a style of long, low table which is designed to be placed in front of a couch, to support beverages such as coffee.
Coffee tables originate from the Ottoman Empire, where they were a common fixture in tea gardens and other places where coffee was served.

Good question I'm a tea drinker too, do you think we are being discriminated against, I mean whats wrong with drinking tea there's no harm in it, I don't like coffee and I won't be made to drink it just because of a table. Sorry must go now am going to write a letter to my MP.

Well, it's a table to set your coffee on. Perhaps, it should be changed throughout the day. Coffee table, lemonade table, sports drink table, beer table, etc.

Steveo is right the Ottomans sat on the floor around low tables and drink coffee. The modern Turks still do this and many cafes in Turkey dont have chairs but cushions.

Because people with manners used to serve coffee to their dinner guests after they ate. They 'retired' to the living room rather than sit at the dirty dining table. This practice replaced the custom of men going to one room to smoke and drink while women went to another to have tea. It's an invention from the 1950's.
